External Competitions: Our Successes
The mini传媒 Law School has a rich history of success in external mooting and negotiation competitions. External competitions provide an exciting opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zone, develop their confidence, hone their skills, and network with legal professionals and law students nationally and internationally.
For example:
- The quarter-final of the 2022-23 OUP & ICCA National Mooting Competition was judged by Lizanne Gumbel KC who provided useful feedback and tips to our competitors.
- Our national finalists of the 2023 CEDR Student Negotiation Competition were invited to a day of negotiation training at the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution in London. During the national finals held over 2 days at the University of Exeter, students participated in three 50-minute negotiations, including one multi-party negotiation, all modelled on real-life cases that had been dealt with by CEDR negotiators.
- Our students travelled to the Hague for the International Rounds of the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition, competing against teams from around Europe, receiving detailed feedback from and opportunities to mingle socially with international law experts and practitioners, as well as watching the international final at the Peace Palace, judged by a judge of the International Court of Justice.
Participation in external mooting competitions is also a way to discover areas of law or consider legal issues that are not covered in depth on the LLB curriculum. In recent years, mini传媒 mooters have researched and presented arguments on legal issues as diverse as: whether cyber-attacks constitute a use of force under international law; responsibility for teachers experiencing burnout in employment law; planning permission for a wind farm located 15 meters from residential homes; and sexual enslavement under international criminal law.

The team placed 4th overall, with Manaal Siddiqui winning 1st place for her strike out application.
